A truck driver has died after being crushed to death by the container he was transporting in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
This is the third fatal accident involving a truck in recent weeks, with a truck driver mowing over 21 people in Pongola last week.
On Monday, the truck driver lost control while travelling downhill on a wet strip of road on the M7/Hans Dettman highway in Moseley Park, Durban.
The reefer container on the trailer shifted, and the truck driver was crushed to death as a result.
Paramedics responding to the scene pronounced the driver dead on scene.
Authorities will be investigating all circumstances leading up to the horrific crash which resulted in the driver’s death.
Emergency services have cautioned motorists to remain vigilant and practice a safe following distance due to bad weather conditions in KZN.
Heavy and persistent rains have affected visibility and makes it difficult to bring a vehicle to a halt.
“Roads are slippery which makes braking harder, especially when travelling downhill. Drivers should reduce their speed or follow the speed limit and keep a safe following distance, when approaching a truck or other vehicles.
It is unfortunate that the driver of the truck lost his life in this instance.”
Paramedics had to use the jaws-of-life to free the driver from the wreckage.
