When a loved one is feeling down, sick, injured, dealing with loss or personal obstacles, it’s only human to want to show that you care by either showering them with gifts or providing heartfelt words of encouragement.
But what happens when words of encouragement become insensitive?
Listen don’t get me wrong, I for one love feeling comforted and supported, but sometimes words of encouragement are not only insensitive, and pretentious but just plain annoying.
On Feel Good with Andy Maqondwana, Andy talks to listeners about the motivational quotes that just don’t motivate, despite motivators being kind and thoughtful.
In a voice note one listener opens up about how certain people are often insensitive to the trauma death can bring, especially that of a child.
“There are just some things that you shouldn’t say, especially when a child has passed on. People will often say ‘You are still young you can make another child’. They also love saying, ‘God has better plans. You don’t say that!”
Many listeners have emphasised how the famous quote, “Tough times never last, only tough people do”, just doesn’t do it for them.
Another listener has opened up about the worst motivation he has witnessed.
“The motivation is when someone says ‘If you need anything, just say the word, and when you do, they just vanish!”
