In 2019 Matwetwe lead actor Sibusiso Khwinana was murdered outside Sterland Mall in Pretoria while waiting for an Uber with his close friend and co-star Tebatso Mashishi.
Speaking about that traumatic experience on 959 Breakfast with Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduka this week, Tebatso Mashishi said he started attending therapy to help him come to terms with the passing of Sibusiso.
“At first, I didn’t want to go to therapy because it was very painful, you just don’t know what to do.
“I went there to kind of save myself because you blame yourself and I kind of got suicidal.
On that fateful day, Tebatso and Sibusiso were attending a screening with some students.
As they were waiting for their uber to arrive, someone snatched the phone and Sbu ran after him.
“I get there and I realised that he was stabbed.”
He says the whole thing was coordinated.
“You know how somebody steals the phone and other people run like they are going to help you? When I got there I realised he was stabbed. I tried to call the ambulance, I tried to call the police.
“The Uber eventually arrived and I explained what happened and if we can’t take him to the hospital and he refused.
“There were people who had cars but they refused. We tried to save him and he lost his life.”
A documentary about Sibusiso Khwinana’s life is set to premiere in cinemas tomorrow.
Tebogo shares that after Khwinana’s passing everyone “was shattered.”
“So the creators of Matwetwe told me that they just felt like they needed to do something to honour him and some form of closure. The documentary is to honour his life.”
