Over the weekend actress Asavela Mqokiyana, formerly Mngqithi, topped trending charts after tweeting that her success should never be credited to her dad Manqoba Mngqithi and his money.
Asavela shared that she has “suffered financially” without Mngqithi’s support.
This made South Africans question Mngqithi as a parent.
Speaking to Daily Sun, the Mamelodi Sundowns head coach said he was about to start working when Asavela’s mother fell pregnant with her.
“From day one I took care of Asavela and I paid damages to her family which is why she used my surname.”
He also maintained that he was present in the actress’ life.
“When she was 14, she was living with me – I paid for her school fees from primary until tertiary.
“She did her tertiary at AFDA and I still have proof of this.”
Despite Mngqithi’s comments, Asavela insists that Mannqoba Mngqithi was an absent father.
In 2019, while chatting to the bar magazine Asavela revealed that she dropped out of AFDA due to a lack of funds.
“The reason I dropped out of AFDA was actually financial problems. I dropped out in my final year in the last semester.
“Part of me was angry because I worked so hard. I didn’t have a lot of things to help me get through to the third year. I felt like it was unfair.”
