City of Johannesburg Speaker Vasco da Gama was voted out of the council early on Thursday morning despite being a member of the DA, which is a part of the governing coalition.
Minority parties have finally succeeded in removing Democratic Alliance (DA) member Vasco da Gama from his post as Johannesburg council speaker after three failed attempts.
This came after the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) filed a motion of no confidence, which the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supported.
Of the 270 council seats in the Joburg city council, 132 councillors voted against the no-confidence vote in Speaker Da Gama, even though The DA-led majority coalition has 140 seats in the Johannesburg council.

DA member and Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Mpho Phalatse, said in a statement that they accepted the outcome of the motion of no confidence against former speaker Da Gama.
“I would like to assure residents that the work of repairing and rebuilding the city remains on track and will not be affected by the outcome of the motion against Da Gama. We note with utter shame that certain members of the coalition elected to vote in favour of the motion, we are also aware that ahead of the motion there were allegations of bribery, which will be detailed in an affidavit,” Phalatse said.
