Brian Molefe and three other co-accused in the R93 million Transnet fraud case have been released on bail of R50 000 each.
The former Transnet group chief executive, as well as Anoj Singh, the parastatal’s former finance chief, were amongst four new arrests made on Monday, 29 August.
Their arrests came following arrangements made by their legal representatives.
Brian Molefe’s lawyer, Mpho Molefe, told the court his client receives R52 000 a month in pension and earns R12 000 a month at a company he’s a director at.
Mpho Molefe also pleaded that his client does not have any previous convictions but said his client could afford to pay between R20 000 to R50 000.
Brian Molefe and three other co-accused comes as Siyabonga Gama, former Transet CEO is expected to return to court to face charges in the R93 million fraud and corruption case on Monday morning.
Gama along with four others were arrested by the Hawks in May. The men have all been linked to the Gupta brothers’ company Trillian and the R30 billion funding of more than 1000 trains.
This dates back to 2012 when Transnet awarded the tender to JB Morgan but then reportedly cancelled the contract with the consulting firm.
It is alleged that Gama, Garry Pita, former Transnet acting group CFO, Phetolo Ramosebudi, former group treasurer, Eric Wood, and Trillian asset management director Daniel Roy all colluded to have the tender reverted to Trillian.
Trillian took over the contract in October 2015 and R93 million was paid to the Gupta linked company.
