From poor service to unreliable products, there is a new report that shows companies that have received the most complaints in South Africa.
In its annual report for the year ending in February 2022, the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (CGSO) has listed the companies and services that have received the most complaints.
The research reveals that just under 70% of consumer complaints come from the telecommunications industry, satellite services, retailers, and furniture and appliance makers.
According to the report, 94% of the complaints were about Goods, services, and agreements.

Kaya Biz with Gugulethu Mfuphi spoke to Queen Munyai – CEO of the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud about some of the findings in the report.

Munyai spoke about the importance of the report and how it was compiled.
“As an alternative dispute resolution body, the (CGSO) was formed in terms of a code which was promulgated by the minister in 2015, in terms of that code we are required to produce a report which gives a breakdown of what complaints we have dealt. We report this to the National Consumer Act Regulation.”
Munyai shared that 60% of complaints resolved resulted in a positive outcome for consumers, with cash refunds totalling R11.5 million.
E-commerce accounted for 25% of complaints received by the sector compared to 27% last year.
According to the report the following companies had the most complaints in
- Mr Shopper – furniture and electronics (May 2021);
- Wiegenkind Boutique – baby and maternity wear (September 2021);
- Ana Eleven Brand – women’s clothing (October 2021); and
- Liepies Online – women’s clothing, shoes, and accessories (February 2022).
