Reeva Steenkamp’s mother, June, has rejected a parole meeting with Oscar Pistorius.
June says she never wants to see the man who killed her daughter ever again. Speaking to Carte Blanche, Reeva’s mother said both her life and that of her husband’s has been greatly marred after losing Reeva.
She said not only did her daughter’s brutal murder take a toll on her marriage but it put strain on her husband, who suffered two strokes and a mental breakdown.
“I don’t want to see him again ever. I would have been feeling ill and afraid. I’m not sure why afraid.”
Reeva’s mother rejected a parole meeting with Oscar Pistorius
Her stance is the complete opposite of Reeva’s father, Barry who met the former, double-amputee sprinter in June this year.
Pistorius was initially sentenced to five years in 2014, for shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day 2013.
His sentence was increased to 15-years by the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2015.
He was found guilty of shooting and killing Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day 2013.
It’s only been 9-years since her murder and Pistorius is already up for parole. The parole meeting with Reeva’s family is not mandatory to secure his release from prison.
Julian Knight, Pistorius’ attorney explained that if the Steenkamps are not ready to go through the VOD process, Oscar Pistorius does not want to force this on them.
“The victim offender dialogue is not a pre-requisite to placement on parole, neither is the consent of the victim’s surviving family,” said Julian Knight.
Pistorius will still need to attend a parole hearing where the Department of Correctional Services will decide if he is eligible for parole.
Oscar Pistorius has served out most of his sentencing in Pretoria but was moved to the correctional facility near the Steenkamp’s home in Gqeberha for the parole meeting with Reeva’s father.
