More than half (55%) of young South African children regularly watch pornography online, according to a disturbing study by the Youth Research Unit (BMR unit) of Unisa’s Bureau for Market Research, as reported by the City Press.
The new research revealed the following:
- 35% of the children watch child pornography and 30% watch violent pornography.
- Nearly 65% also watch pornography between a man and a woman.
- They don’t really care that child pornography is illegal.
According to Dr. Antoinette Basson, a psychologist affiliated with the BMR section, most of the time, children are accidentally seeing their first adult video or image every day.
“Parents put on a movie for the child and continue working. Then a pop-up appears and the child clicks on it and goes to a pornography website. Or they Google something like ‘Barbie doll’ and then they land on a pornographic website. Children are curious and then go further and deeper into the porn site.” says Basson,
According to MomsLife.com you can protect your child from pornography in the following ways:
– Keep home computers in public rooms. Avoid spaces with doors that may be closed, such as bedrooms
– Install Internet filters or software where you can track usage on all your children’s devices.
– Join any social networks your kids are on and get their passwords, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. They ought to be aware that you can keep an eye on their friends
– Collect cell phones at night to recharge them … and to let your kids recharge without them!
