The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has shared the National Shutdown assembly points details.
Set to take place on Wednesday, 24 August, the planned national day of action will go ahead across all provinces.
Those wishing to partake in the Gauteng leg of the shutdown will have to assemble at Burgers Park in Vander Walt Street, Tshwane at 09h00.
COSATU will be staging the National Shutdown to highlight the rising cost of living and an inadequate minimum wage. Other issues include the costs of transport, petrol increases, unemployment and increasing electricity costs amid ongoing loadshedding.
“The rising costs of living are rendering the minimum wage inadequate. The costs of household food basket is R4 688. This excludes the costs of other household and personal hygiene products, electricity, transport, and other social services in the context of the declining quality of public services.
SAFTU reiterates the demand of a Basic Income Grant (BIG) of R1500, that is R150 above the upper-bound poverty line. We believe that the BIG will in turn have positive multiplier effects in the economy by boosting demand and productions. Whilst relieving poverty among the unemployed.”

The COSATU strike coincides with SAFTU planned national shutdown on the same date. Both allied unions will be joining forces to ensure a coordinated strike takes place on the same day.
