The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) will go ahead with its planned nationwide strike set for 24 August.
Last month, the South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) said the date was tentative until all bases were covered with regards to mobilising people for the strike.
While members and other allied unions are not obligated to join in the strike, COSATU says the planned shutdown is due to the ongoing loadshedding, fuel price hikes and escalating food prices.
More details about the strike will be fleshed out to media on Thursday, 18 August at COSATU house.
The COSATU strike coincides with SAFTU planned national shutdown on the same date. Both allied unions will be joining forces to ensure a coordinated strike takes place on the same day.
“The rising costs of living are rendering the minimum wage inadequate. The costs of household food basket is R4 688. This excludes the costs of other household and personal hygiene products, electricity, transport, and other social services in the context of the declining quality of public services.
SAFTU reiterates the demand of a Basic Income Grant (BIG) of R1500, that is R150 above the upper-bound poverty line. We believe that the BIG will in turn have positive multiplier effects in the economy by boosting demand and productions. Whilst relieving poverty among the unemployed.”
