A Gqeberha family is coming to terms with a tragic accident that claimed the life of their 5-year old daughter.
This after the girl’s 6-year old brother, accidentally shot her in the head whilst playing with a firearm.
The children were playing in a room on Thursday, 11 August when a .38 revolver went off between 13h00 and 14h00.
Bethelsdorp police said the firearm was removed from the property and could not be found.
The little girl was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition but unfortunately died in hospital on Thursday evening.
A case of culpable homicide and defeating the ends of justice has been opened and police are investigating the incident.
“SAPS Bethelsdorp detectives have opened a case of defeating the ends of justice following a shooting incident where it is alleged that a six-year-old boy accidentally shot his five-year-old sister on Thursday afternoon in Bethelsdorp.
Sadly, the five-year-old girl passed away last night in hospital. A case of culpable homicide will be added to the defeating the ends of the justice case.”

Police have stressed the importance of keeping firearms safely out of reach from children, preferably in a safe, locked and unloaded.
It is advised to store ammunition in a locked safe place, separately from the firearm.
