As temperatures become warmer and nights shorter, tonight (Thursday, 11 August 2022), marks the last Super Moon of the year.
Augusts full moon also called the Sturgeon Super Moon is the third closest full moon of the year.
Starting in the 1930s, Maine Farmer’s Almanac began publishing Native American names for the full moons. Since then, these names have become widely known and used.
According to this almanac, as the full moon in August the Algonquin tribes in what is now the northeastern United States called this the Sturgeon Moon after the large fish that were more easily caught this time of year in the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water.
The moon will be appearing bright and full both tonight right through Saturday evening and will peak at around 9.36pm.
