The president of the party, Mosiuoa Lekota, has been called upon to resign by members of the Congress of the People (COPE) Constituency Congress Committees in Gauteng.
This was resolved in a meeting held in July to discuss the party’s difficulties with expansion, reconstruction, and renewal.
This is just one of the 10 resolutions the party passed in an effort to restore itself by taking “drastic moves.”
Conflicts over leadership are not new to COPE. Mbhazima Shilowa and Lekota engaged in a disagreement that caused tensions within the party in 2013.

Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke COPE’s Ekurhuleni Secretary Mxolisi Ntobela about the party’s resolution.

Ntobela says although the party still respects its leader, there is consensus that Lekota has not shown the strong leadership he did in the past, and in so doing has violated the constitution of COPE.
“He is conflicted when it comes to the crisis of Ekurhuleni at this point, as he is the one that wrote an affidavit that supports a criminal. called Comrade Mofokeng who installed himself at the City of Ekurhuleni as a representative of the Congress of the People.”said Ntobela
COPE members have said that he must consider retiring because his health is also not on his side anymore, however they also say that Lekota did not want to listen to their advice.
