Renowned South African actress and director Connie Ferguson joins 959 Breakfast with Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduka
Connie Ferguson is regarded as The Queen, literally, of South African television.
Her illustrious career spans over two decades.
Connie is best known for her roles as Karabo Moroka on Generations and Harriet Khoza on The Queen.
Speaking to 959 Breakfast about her daughters Lesedi and Ali, the actress says her first pregnancy was a scary experience.
“When I had Lesedi I was 22 years old and a first-time mom. It was a scary experience, even the pregnancy itself. But after I had her I think I changed immediately.
“I had literally just started working so I couldn’t take time off work. I didn’t have that luxury and went back to work when she was a week old.”
She recalls having to carry Lesedi to auditions and sometimes shoots.
“I remember I used to carry my baby when I went to auditions. Sometimes I’d go to shoots with her if the shoot wasn’t too long.
“There were times when I had to leave her with a very loving family and the first time I had to do that my heart broke. I was worried if she was okay.”
When Connie Ferguson had Ali, things were different as she had moved up in her career.
“With Ali life had progressed quite a bit. I had a supportive partner. Mothering the two was very different”
She says Lesedi and Ali are “extremely different.”
“Lesedi is an extrovert. She has a mind of her own. I try not to reel her in too much because she is her own person. Ali is very much an introvert – she is very much like me. She is an introvert and can be an extrovert.
Connie considers her younger sister, Atosie, as her daughter
“Ke mo godisitse so I’m her second mom. I’m 11 years older than her. I was in my late 20s when she came to stay with me. She had just matriculated and had to come repeat this side.”
