South Africa has not started the Gupta extradition process yet, despite their arrest in Dubai more than a month ago.
This according to South African Justice Minister, Ronald Lamola who shared the update in response to the DA’s inquiry about the infamous brothers in Parliament.
Lamola says the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) first needs to submit a request to the Justice Department’s Director-General.
Further to this request, the exact place the brothers are being held has to first be established with Dubai authorities.
However, a few weeks after the Gupta brothers’ arrest, the NPA said it was in communication with relevant authorities in the UAE and SA.
The Gupta brothers’ arrest comes with help from Interpol, including a warrant for four others in relation to fraud of over R24 million.
Rajesh and Atul Gupta have been linked to former President Jacob Zuma and corruption during his tenure. Using bribes to influence and benefit from senior appointments, contracts and tenders.
Charges the Gupta’s have vehemently denied. In 2018, they fled South Africa after siphoning billions of Rands from various parastatals in the country.
