Imagine finding someone who you’re compatible with, and the chemistry is palpable between you, only to discover that they are actually related to you?
Believe it or not, some Feel Good listeners found out they were dating a relative and shared that experience with Andy Maqondwana.
For a few people, it was a case of “too good to be true” syndrome before the harsh reality that the person they’re in love with is family.
“Long story short, boy meets girl, girl likes boy, boy likes girl. Until one day I’m having a conversation with my gogo and being close with my gogo, I shared I had met someone and I want to introduce her. Only for this girl to attend a funeral in the family and I find out the day before the funeral, that, yup we’re related.”
Another found out after having a second child with her partner that they are close cousins. That must have been a shocker.
Listen to the conversation on Feel Good:
As listeners shared that most of the time they were hit with the news that they’re dating a relative months even years later, more people are now getting DNA tests.
This will provide clarity on whether or not there are genetic links between you and the person you’re with.
Others advise hosting a family reunion every 4 to 5 years, where distant and extended family members are given the opportunity to meet other relatives that they may not be aware of.
This includes half-siblings who may be excluded from family events.
But, there are also the rare hookups with a relative you’re aware of, and you get into something knowingly.
“I hooked up with my cousin on my father’s side and we had the most explosive relationship. He was such a spontaneous guy and we had sex everywhere, and although I’m married to someone else now, he still wants me. I’m tempted but we know it’s wrong and so we just go about our lives.”
For some, dating or being intimate with a family member is a turn-on and fetish.
