On Tuesday, a number of South African official websites fell down, including those for the departments of Home Affairs, the Presidency, StatsSA, and the Department of Mineral & Energy Resources.
Government websites have previously experienced outages before this year.
On Tuesday afternoon, attempts to browse multiple websites resulted in alerts stating that the desired URL could not be accessed.

Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Loyiso Boyce a Cyber Security Expert who outlined what might have been the cause of the crash.

Boyce says the problem could have come from anywhere and gave a context with a previous crash that happened earlier this year with the various departments.
“This has happened previously, I know that in February this year and the Department of Home Affairs was affected, the same way they are affected now, the Presidency was affected the same way they are now. In that instance, the issue seemed from service providers who were servicing those departments as well as the State Information Technology Agency, and at that time there was an issue with connectivity with the data centre and the various sites they need to service.” says Boyce.
Tlali Tlali, the spokesperson for the State Information Technology Agency, said he was unable to respond right away.
The problem appears to have been fixed by Tuesday afternoon.
