On Wednesday, it was announced that Kaizer Motaung, the founder and chairman of Kaizer Chiefs, would be awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Cape Town.
He is a former member of the South African national team and the owner of the Kaizer Chiefs (Amakhosi).
Currently, he serves as both the club’s chairman and managing director.

The eminent former South African footballer was born in 1944 in Soweto’s Orlando East community. He made his professional debut with the Orlando Pirates FC at the age of 16.
The Economic Freedom Fighter was one of the groups that pushed for Motaung’s contributions to South African soccer to be acknowledged.

After the announcement, they issued a statement in which they declared;
“The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) welcomes the decision by the University of Cape Town (UCT) to bestow South African Football Legend Kaizer Motaung with an Honorary Doctorate.
“The University of Cape Town will on the 22nd of July 2022, honour Ntate Kaizer Motaung with an Honorary Doctorate in Social Sciences, for his tremendous contribution to Sports Development.
“The EFF recognises and salutes the Commander in Chief and President of the EFF, Julius Malema, who at the 2nd National People’s Assembly (NPA) of the organisation, called for Kaizer Motaung to be honoured for his service to the footballing fraternity in Africa.” read the statement.
