Kenya now exports more avocados than South Africa combined across Africa. They are currently the third-largest producer of avocados in the world.
According to SABC News, the East African country surpassed South Africa to take the top spot in Africa for avocado exports last year.
Kenya exported 72,000 tonnes of avocados in 2020, up from 59,000 tonnes recorded in 2019.

Europe is one of Kenya’s major markets for avocados and takes the lion’s share of fruit.

Avocados are the country’s top fruit and they are constantly expanding to different markets.

According to reports farmers are using unconventional measures to protect their harvests; and are using vigilantes who patrol the farms around the clock, seven days a week, to make sure no theft occurs there.
According to Fresh Plaza South Africa’s avocado production is slowly catching up to the global market, “Between 45 and 50% of South Africa’s avocados are exported; 10 to 12% are processed into oil and guacamole; and the rest are sold locally. About 95% of South African avocado exports are to Europe, the United Kingdom (UK), and Russia.”
