President Cyril Ramaphosa will address a hybrid Joint Sitting of the National Council of Province and the National Assembly on Tuesday, 26 April.
The President’s address will be on the oversight role Parliament and other institutions or sectors of society could play in the country’s response to the natural disaster that has affected KwaZulu-Natal.
The Joint Sitting was called by the President on 20 April 2022, in terms of Section 84(2)(d) of the Constitution.
Ramaphosa is inviting Parliament to ensure that resources reserved for social and economic assistance following recent floods reach the intended beneficiaries.
Government’s response is unfolding in three phases: firstly, immediate humanitarian relief, ensuring that all affected persons are safe and that their basic needs are met.
Secondly, building shelters for people who have lost their homes and restoring provision of services.
Thirdly, on reconstruction and rebuilding of infrastructure.
On Monday, the eThekwini municipality shared that damages to the water pipes affecting water supply in parts of KZN is estimated to cost over R1 billion.
Apart from private property costs, roads and railway transport lines were severely damaged in the floods and the costs to rebuild KZN keep mounting.
Today’s hybrid sitting will take place at 14h00 from the Cape of Good Hope Chambers and will be livestreamed on the Presidency platforms.
