Government will be setting aside R1 billion to assist KZN flood victims with rebuilding their homes that were lost over the past week.
President Ramaphosa who visited the flood ravaged province on Wednesday assured those affected by the floods that they will have government’s support to rebuild.
Ramaphosa reiterated that funds are available and will be allocated accordingly once measures have been approved. Addressing communities in KZN on Friday, 15 April, the president said the Finance Minister has made funds available and a rollout plan is being devised.
The plan will be implemented in two phases: first each ministerial portfolio will assess damages and put a proposal together as to what can be done.
Secondly, a budget for each affected household will be allocated and repairs will begin.
An estimated 13 593 households were affected when houses were either partially or completely destroyed by the floods.
Almost 40 723 people were displaced and are said to be housed in temporary shelters and 395 people have died.
More rain is expected in KwaZulu-Natal this weekend and the South African Weather Services warn that further flooding and landslides could occur.
