The DA’s motion of no confidence against President Cyril Ramaphosa and cabinet was unsuccessful on Wednesday, 30 March.
Only 131 MPs voted in favour of the motion, whilst 231 stood against it. Willie Madisha from COPE chose to abstain from the vote and the PAC was not present.
The first motion of no confidence was conducted with the use of a roll call system, where speaker of parliament Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula had to call MPs up one by one.
MPs then stated whether they were for or against the motion of no confidence.
Voting in support of the ANC were opposition parties including the IFP, GOOD, AIC, the NFP and Al Jama-ah.

Whilst the DA, EFF, FF Plus, ACDP, UDM and ATM voted against what they called “Ramaphosa’s poverty cabinet.”
In a bid to oust corrupt ANC MPs and Deputy MPs, the DA conducted a review of the ANC’s “progress” over the years.
“Allow me to conduct a performance review on this ANC poverty cabinet, let’s start with Deputy President DD Mabuza who’s buried deep in the Russian regime. Next are ministers Dlamini-Zuma and Patel who must have once had a terrible encounter with a chainsmoking, flip-flop wearing, alcoholic chicken because they used the entire lockdown to settle this vendetta.”

ANC Ministers were singled out for corruption. Earlier this week, the DA led an exposé over cabinets frivolous expenditure of luxury vehicles between 2019 and 2021.
Meanwhile, the ANC members maintained their loyalty to the party with every member voting in favour of Ramaphosa and its cabinet.
Which means Ramaphosa’s cabinet remain untouched. This makes the run-up to the 2024 elections seem like an uphill battle for the opposition.
