Now that you’re an adult, what items do you consider expensive that you may have overlooked when you were younger?
For Andy Maqondwana, it’s glue. Yes, glue, which costs anything between R90 to R137 for a pack of 3 jumbo sticks.
Hosting Midday Joy, Andy shared that she only realised how expensive glue sticks are when she bought stationery for her siblings.
“Adulting” will have you questioning why you were in such a hurry to grow up and do things on your own. Independence aside, it’s only when you have to start paying your own way that you realise how expensive everything is.
I remember how I wanted a large family when I was younger, convinced I’d want at least 4 kids.
One child later, I laugh at my ridiculous ambitions to raise more than one child now that I understand how expensive it is.
Nappies, formula, baby grooming products, clothing, medical expenses, school fees, and the list goes on. Needless to say, I no longer want to have my own soccer team and one child is more than enough.
Last year, TikTok user Mama Dougiee shared a video, asking people to share something they didn’t know was expensive until they became an adult.
For Mama Dougiee, it’s 2-ply toilet paper. “Not only do I have to pay good money for this but I have to now fight people just to get a pack from the store.”
Remember the time people were panic-buying toilet paper due to the Covid-19 pandemic?

South Africans have also been lamenting about the cost of petrol in the country, since the recent increase took the price up to R21/litre.
With more expected increases in April, the cost of petrol is one of those things that are hitting motorists hard.
Things that are expensive now that you’re an adult include:
- Tertiary education
- Medical Aid
- Cellphone contracts/data
- Food
- Buying a home/living alone
- Coffee
- Alcohol
- Furniture
- Owning a pet
- Buying a car
- Insurance
- Eating out
- Holidays
