Police Minister, Bheki Cele believes the unrest from July 2021 had nothing to do with poverty but had everything to do with people who wanted to forcefully and violently change the system.
The minister testified during the last leg of the South African Human Rights Commission hearing into the unrest.
Cele told the SAHRC provincial manager that the attacks were hybrid and focused on three things: targeted selection; extensive looting by people from informal settlements; and attacks on interprovincial arterial roads.
He believes that the attacks were planned and communicated through social media platforms, such as Twitter and WhatsApp.
Thomas In The Morning show believes that the attacks were orchestrated to distract us from the real issue of state capture.
Kaya 959 listeners share what would be their contribution at the South African Human Rights Commission hearing into the unrest from last year:
“It was never about people being hungry, they were actually protecting people who let this country down. Those we know very well and they will never ever win,” shares a listener.
Another listener agrees that there was a hidden agenda, but believes the unrest highlighted the hunger in the country.
“The day I saw what was happening. The masterminds had their own agenda. If people had work, they wouldn’t be lootings. How is that not hunger? For the movement to grow the way it did, yes there was an element of hunger,” she shared.

#JulyUnrest People from Gauteng & KZN blaming hunger & poverty for looting, Are Other People From Other Provinces Not Hungry, Why didn't they Loot?
This was politically motivated.#Onthestreetontheair #thomasandskhumba #Kaya959
@KayaON959 #ThomasAndSkhumba There are so many poor countries in Africa but they never destroy rhe little they have. In SA, we just have a problem with lawlessness. 2nd, if politicos waa not involved, the whole thing could have mipped in the butt.
