After rising tension at Hoërskool Jan Viljoen this week over racism allegations, a teacher accused of sexual misconduct has been suspended.
This according to the School Governing Body (SGB) who made the decision to suspend the teacher amid further investigations.
Following several incidents of fights between black and white learners at the school in Randfontein, allegations of a racist culture and protecting a sexual predator surfaced.
The altercations between pupils escalated and parents got involved in heated exchanges this week.
MEC for Education in Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi was scheduled to meet with parents on Thursday, however due to heavy rains, the meeting has since been rescheduled to Sunday.
Classrooms resumed for the week but parents want the MEC to intervene because they are growing increasingly frustrated at the situation at the school.
Parents and learners of colour say the school is discriminatory and more lenient towards white learners.
The racially charged incident on Friday was over a group of black learners playing music during break under a tree.
Learners were then called “animals”, the “K-word” was used and learners were pushed around the grounds.
Parents say complaints to the principal has fallen on deaf ears and the teachers and white learners who initiated the altercation were not held accountable.
Since then, several learners have spoken out about a teacher at the school of sexual misconduct.
Speaking to the media, learners recounted incidents and claim they reported the matter to the principal who just laughed it off.
Parents are calling for the dismissal of the teacher and are waiting on the MEC to put together a plan of action so they can find a way forward.
