Eskom have confirmed that an employee was arrested for the alleged theft of transformer oil on Thurday, 10 February.
The employee was caught by Eskom’s security personnel whilst trying to exit the utility’s premises in Rosherville, Johannesburg.
Caught with three full drums of transformer oil as well as six 5l containers of power safety solvent gel, the man was arrested on scene.
He appeared in court on Monday on a charge of theft.
The Eskom employee was found without a permit to remove the above materials.
According to Eskom, the man had a permit to only remove two full drums of the oil and two empty ones.
The accused employee will also be subjected to an internal disciplinary process.
In a statement, Eskom Gauteng Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Manager, Kith Maitisa said, “We are disappointed that one of our own is implicated in the alleged theft. Eskom remains committed to resource optimisation where we ensure that all material is channelled to its intended use.”
The news comes after the state-owned public utility implemented loadshedding earlier this month.
Eskom has further reiterated that its committed to clamping down on illegal activities, including in instances where its employees are involved.
“We continue to urge all those who may be aware of any form of criminal acts by Eskom employees or anyone else, to anonymously alert us by calling the Eskom Crime Line on 0800 112 722 “, adds Maitisa.
