The country waits with bated breath for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) this evening.
SONA 2022 will for the first time be presented at Cape Town’s City Town Hall due to the Parliament fire in January.
Ramaphosa will be delivering his fifth SONA since taking office in 2018. He will be expected to address many challenges and present key solutions to SA’s tough economic problems.
Amongst the issues, predictions are that the president will include the electricity crisis that has plagued South Africa for years.
Loadshedding remains a concern and Eskom’s incessant push for a 20.5% tariff hike has been met with negative reaction by taxpayers.
The ANC’s stance on corruption has been highlighted significantly since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Last month Ramaphosa received Part 1 and 2 of the State Capture Report, describing it as a“defining moment in the country’s effort to restore government integrity, credibility and capability of institutions.”
The president also authorised the Special Investigating Unit’s report into corrupt PPE tenders to be released to the public.
In the effort to maintain transparency under his rule, Ramaphosa will have to convince the nation that he deserves another tenure as Head of State.
He will be up for re-election as president of the ANC in December.
SONA 2022 is expected to start at 19h00 this evening.
Kaya 959 will be broadcasting a special coverage of the address on Kaya Biz with Gugulethu Mfupi and Point of View with Phemelo Motene.
