Family and colleagues of the slain Tembisa Hospital nurse who was shot and killed yesterday by her police officer boyfriend say she was in a toxic relationship.
This is why she left the relationship and moved out of the home they were sharing.
On Wednesday, 30-year old Lebo Monene who was on duty at the time, was called by her boyfriend who entered the hospital parking lot in a state vehicle.
She was then shot and killed before her partner turned the gun on himself.
Eyewitnesses recount that the couple appeared to be having an argument in the hospital parking lot before the shooting.
Her family told media that there were several times the police officer had threatened that he was going to shoot Monene.
Monene was a mother to two young boys who now have to grow up without their mother. Her brother said that she had moved back home because the relationship had taken a violent turn.
Whenever the two argued he would reach for his gun and tell her that she would die at his hands. There are also mentions of physical altercations with her colleagues sharing that he had previously assaulted her in a mall.
An investigation is now underway to determine if there was a history of gender-based violence.
The accused officer was stabilised and airlifted to Milpark Hospital for treatment.
Should he recover he will be charged with the murder of his girlfriend.
Since the incident nurses and hospital staff say they are concerned about their safety and are calling for intervention.
The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) are urging the Department of Health to change the law regarding police officers entering hospitals with their firearms.
