A fatal shooting at Tembisa Hospital has claimed the life of an enrolled nursing assistant, shutting the hospital down on Wednesday morning.
The nurse was allegedly shot by her police officer partner.
The incident occurred at 08h00 when the officer arrived at the hospital and parked in the Accident and Emergency Department’s parking lot.
Driving a state vehicle, the officer had blue lights on when he arrived.
In a statement released by the Gauteng Department of Health, the officer called his 30-year old partner to meet him in the parking lot.
Upon her arrival the officer then opened fire on his partner, before turning the gun on himself. Unfortunately, the nurse died on the scene and the officer is currently in a critical condition in hospital.
The hospital had to be temporarily closed following the incident and they are not currently in a position to receive the public.
Calls are being diverted to nearby facilities and the public is urged visit other healthcare facilities until the hospital reopens.
Patients and staff will undergo a debriefing and receive counselling.
