The City of Johannesburg has confirmed the arrest of a “hard-drive thief” who broke into the Independent Electoral Commission offices.
A 38-year old woman is allegedly involved for the break-in and she will be formerly charged with possession of stolen goods, trespassing as well as breaking and entering.
She will appear in the Hillbrow Magistrates Court.
In a statement released by the COJ’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service, the notorious “hard-drive thief” was arrested at Metro Centre.
The suspect was spotted by patrolling security personnel while trying to break an emergency exit door.
Once back-up arrived, the building was searched and the suspect was found in a second-floor office that she had allegedly broken into.
According to the COJ, this isn’t the first time the woman has been implicated in theft at the department.
In October 202, she was arrested for a similar crime but the case was thrown out of court for lack of evidence.
The suspect is said to be a service provider for the COJ and is registered as a Director of five companies.
Two weeks ago the woman was caught on CCTV footage carrying bags of computer hard drives which were stolen from the Development Planning Offices and Group Legal and Contract Services offices.
When she was confronted, the woman could not explain what she was doing in the building or why she was in possession of the stolen hard-drives.
An investigation is now underway.
