An Eastern Cape community is struggling to come to terms with the death of a 20-month old toddler died after being raped.
The child was brutally raped on Thursday, allegedly by her 27-year old father.
The man from Ntsimbini Administrative area in Port St John’s in the Eastern Cape has since been arrested.
According to police, the girl was rushed to hospital but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries and died on Friday.
Prior to the alleged rape, the man got into an altercation with his mother and siblings.
Over-powering the women he then proceeded to rape the toddler.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Lusikisiki Magistrates’ Court facing charges of murder and rape.
Rape in the Eastern Cape remains a concern, with SAPS statistics from 2021 recording over 1500 rape cases.
In South Africa, one in five children will experience sexual abuse during their lifetime, this according to Crime Statistics for 2019/2020.
During this period 24 000 children were sexually assaulted in South Africa.
