Many South Africans will be hitting the road this festive season.
Whether it is going to visit family and friends or going on holiday, make sure you don’t become a victim of car theft or hijacking.
A report by Business Day shows that Gauteng has the highest vehicle crime. This was revealed by Tracker SA.
The tracking company revealed that criminals target vehicles of those returning from shopping centres.
“South Africans should be wary and remain vigilant at all times, especially when returning home from shopping or when goods bought online are delivered to their homes. Hijackings are often violent and there are instances where a hostage is taken,” COO at Tracker SA, Duma Ngcobo, told the publication.
He added that criminals also target those who stop on the roadside.
“Sometimes, criminals pretend there is something wrong with your vehicle, a method known as flagging down. They also take advantage of drivers stopped on the side of the road or those picking up hitchhikers,” he added.

Below are tips from SAPS on how you can keep your vehicle safe this festive season.
Plan your route in advance.
Keep the doors locked and wind the windows up at all times.
Do not leave your mobile phone or other valuables where they are visible from outside the vehicle.
Lock valuable items in the boot (trunk) before your departure.
At night, park in well-lit areas.
Never pick up strangers or hitchhikers.
If in doubt about the safety of an area, phone a police station for advice and help.
Make sure you have the number of the car rental company at hand in case you get stranded.
