Former Lesotho prime minister Thomas Thabane has been charged with the murder of his estranged wife, Lipolelo Thabane.
Lipolelo was killed while she was seated in her car in Maseru in 2017.
Her death came just days before Thabane was sworn in as premier. The couple had been going through a difficult divorce at the time of her murder.
Lesotho police claim that Thabane’s current wife, Maesaiah Thabane, had hired eight hitmen to murder Lipolelo.
Police say Maesaiah was not present when the murder took place.
Thabane and Maesaiah were married in August, just two months after the murder.

Both Thabane and Maesaiah were charged with the murder. Police also charged them for the attempted murder of Lipolelo’s friend.
The friend was also in the car at the time of the shooting. The couple has denied involvement in the killing.
Thabane and Maesaiah appeared in court this week. The case continues.
Reuters reported that Thabane resigned in May 2020 after pressure to quit from his All Basotho Convention (ABC) party, opposition figures and South African mediators.
The case will be heard on March 8 – 10, 2022.
