We were all anxious about what the president would say following the recent spike in new Covid-19 infections on Sunday evening.
We missed out on December last year, and many South Africans were unprepared to go through the same this year. President Cyril Ramaphosa revealed that the country would remain on level 1 lockdown until further notice.
All the festive plans were falling perfectly in place until it was announced that petrol prices would be increasing again.
Petrol will increase by 81c per litre, while diesel will increase by 72.5c per litre (0.05% sulphur) and 74.5c (0.005% sulphur).
This morning, Thomas and Skhumba ask Kaya 959 listeners how the hike in the price of petrol has affected their December plans.
Noni from Pretoria says that the price of petrol is the least of her worries. “I’m not staying indoors this December; petrol has been going up all our lives. We don’t budget in Pretoria,” she shared.
On the contrary, another caller said that she wouldn’t be going out as times are tough. “Financially, I haven’t recovered from last year. I’ve put myself under debt review; I don’t even have money to go to work,” she said.
For another listener, she will worry about saving money in January. “It doesn’t change anything. We are going on holiday; life is too short, and we have earned it. We will deal with everything else in January,” she shared.

Does tomorrow’s petrol price hike change anything for you? Are you cutting out one or two things you planned doing this December are you having a BIG December petrol hike or no petrol hike? #ThomasAndSkhumba
