Dr Mpho Phalatse has been elected the Mayor of Johannesburg. Councillor Vasco da Gama was elected Council Speaker.
“The election of both Dr Phalatse and Cllr Da Gama comes as a result of a spontaneous vote of support from other opposition parties,” says DA Gauteng Provincial Leader Solly Msimanga.
He adds that the task ahead will come with its challenges due to the broken state that Johannesburg finds itself in.
Phalatse beat ANC candidate Mpho Moerane.

The DA also celebrated victory in Ekurhuleni after Tania Campbell was named executive mayor of the metro.
Campbell beat the ANC’s Mzwandile Masina. Raymond Dhlamini, also of the DA, was elected Speaker.
“This was a spontaneous show of faith by other opposition parties in the DA’s ability to govern and a collective expression of the voters’ will to remove the ANC from government,” adds Msimanga.

Chaos in eThekwini
Meanwhile, eThekwini has yet to announce its new mayor, deputy mayor, and chief whips.
EWN reported that a council meeting quickly spiralled with officials swearing at each other. EFF supporters also stormed the gates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium where the meeting was held.
eThekwini spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela adds that the inaugural meeting of the eThekwini Municipality Council has ended prematurely following a power failure in the venue.
He says while the teams were working on restoring power, the meeting was also disrupted by a group of individuals.
“The municipality is investigating how the security controls were breached. The newly-elected Speaker, Cllr Thabani Nyawose will reconvene the meeting in due course,” he says.
