Three children have died allegedly after consuming a packet of noodles.
Police have not confirmed the exact cause of death.
Thie incident happened this past weekend in New Brighton in the Eatern Cape.
“On Saturday, the children, aged 11, 7 and 4-months old went with their grandparents to visit family. They stayed over and 11-year-old Sinothando Ngwendu went to a shop and bought a packet of noodles,” says SAPS spokesperson, Captain Priscilla Naidu.
Naidu says the girl then cooked the noodles and ate them with the two other children before going home.
Police say when they arrived home in Motherwell, Sinothando complained that she was feeling nauseous.
“Her grandmother gave her some water to drink. The other child, Olwam Ngwendu (7) also complained of stomach cramps and nausea. While being driven with private transport to the Motherwell clinic, they passed away,” Naidu says.
She adds that shortly after the two children left for the hospital, Athenkosi Ngwendu (4 months old) also passed away while en route to the hospital in another vehicle.
Naidu says a post mortem will be conducted to establish how the children died.
In August, three children died after consuming rat poison in the Free State.
News24 reported that the children had been left in the care of their older sister when they went to a local tuckshop.
Police said the mother arrived home later in the day to find four-year-old Nolwazi Selepe and 11-year-old Tebello Selepe dead.
Free State police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said the eldest child, Katleho Selepe, died a short while later.
Police found traces of rat poison outside the room. An inquest docket was opened.
