Whether you’re a people’s person or not, having guests in your home push your boundaries can make things uncomfortable. On Midday Joy this Thursday listeners shared with Andy Maqondwana the habits that guests exude which forces them to never be invited over again.
The biggest form of disrespect from most of the listeners were guests who helped themselves and opened cupboards without asking.
Understandably this action is not only invasive but it puts the host in an uncomfortable position.
“What if I was going through a tough month and don’t have groceries and just scraping by? Imagine having to explain that to a guest in your house,” one Midday Joy listener shared.
Having to explain your situation when it’s a conversation you may not have wanted to get into makes things awkward.
One listener shared that her friend used to question her about everything she purchased.
“I banned her because she wanted to know how much I paid for every little thing that she noticed when she came over. Why do you need to know where I bought it from and how much I spent?” she shared with Andy.
Midday Joy listeners shared with Andy Maqondwana what guests do that results in them losing an invitation into their homes:

Things to be mindful of as a guest:
- Overstaying your welcome
If you were invited over for a catch-up over coffee, don’t be presumptuous and expect the invitation to be extended to lunch or dinner.
- Going overboard with alcohol
Having guests who are over the limit and cannot control their behaviour is a big one. Be respectful of your host, their home and belongings. Some people don’t drink in front of their children and this should be respected.
- Opening cupboards
One listener shared a tip for catching out guests who fiddle around in your cupboards, marbles. Keep a few marbles in drawers and cupboards so it makes a noise which catches people off-guard.
If the parents are not going to discipline their children, the host may have to tell the parent to intervene or discipline the child personally. Many people shared that they would not invite their friends or family back if this happens.
- Leave the bathroom in the state you found it
When using the bathroom in someone’s house, make sure you don’t leave it in a mess.
