The Democratic Alliance (DA) has emerged victorious in Phoenix, in Durban, despite the controversy of messaging on its election campaign posters in the area.
The party has been largely criticised for its election campaign posters in the township, which read: “The ANC called you racists. The DA calls you heroes”.

Thirty-six people were killed in the area during a wave of unrest. It was sparked by the arrest of former President Jacob Zuma.
He was sentenced to 15 months in prison after he disregarded a Constitutional Court ruling that instructed him to appear and testify before the state capture commission.

By Wednesday, it was confirmed that the party had taken Ward 52, which it lost in 2016. Back then, the ANC claimed 4,610 votes to the DA’s 4,409 in the ward.
As yet unreleased figures show that the DA garnered 4,223 votes in Ward 52 on Monday, with the ANC obtaining 1,221.
The EFF also increased its showing in this ward, raking in 476 votes. In 2016, it had managed only 288.
