Road Freight Association calls for calm after truck drivers’ protest

Traffic is flowing freely on the N3 Toll Route on Wednesday morning after a truck drivers’ protest caused massive traffic delays between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

The N3 Toll Concession says traffic has cleared between Cedara and Heidelberg.

“The scene between Swinburne and Montrose where a load of manganese was dropped in the southbound lanes, was cleared in the early hours of Wednesday morning,” says N3TC operations manager, Thania Dhoogra.

Trucks were lined up on the N3 near Balmoral in the Free State on Tuesday.

Dhoogra says trucks were stacked at the scene while light motor vehicles were allowed to move through a single lane.

Highway police patrol vehicles and Road Traffic Inspectorate officials were at the scene. The highway was also affected at Montrose.

Calls for calm

The Road Freight Association (RFA) has called for calm after the protest.

The protest stems from ongoing grievances with local drivers on the employment of foreign truckers at logistics companies.

RFA CEO Gavin Kelly calls on police and transport officials to use their appointed peace officers to ensure that roadways remain open.

“The continual attack on the logistics supply chain and the willful disregard by sectors who continue to drive agendas outside the collective bargaining structure, or to further their grievances by attacking the law-abiding citizenry, must be brought to a stop

Kelly says the government has promised to resolve the matter of illegal foreigners for years but has not done so.

“Transporters and freight operators who abide by the collective agreement signed with the representatives of truck drivers and unions are targeted time and again without reason,” he adds.

Several trucks blocked off part of the N10 near Middleburg at the weekend. The truck drivers refused to leave the area until their demands were met.

Ministers Thulas Nxesi and Fikile Mbalula met with the angry drivers. Officials later opened to the roadway traffic.

    • consonant with the constitutional values of democracy and openness, the need for economic and social progress, within the framework of the information society, requires the removal of unnecessary impediments to the free flow of information, including personal information;

    • regulate, in harmony with international standards, the processing of personal information by public and private bodies in a manner that gives effect to the right to privacy subject to justifiable limitations that are aimed at protecting other rights and important interests,
    1. Definitions and Interpretation

    1.1.“Personal Information” means information relating to an identifiable, living, natural person and where it is applicable, identifiable, existing juristic person, including all information as defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013. 

    1.2  Parliament assented to POPIA on 19 November 2013. The commencement date of section 1, Part A of Chapter 5, section 112 and section 113 was 11 April 2014. The commencement date of the other sections was 1 July 2020 (with the exception of section 110 and 114(4). The President of South Africa has proclaimed the POPI commencement date to be 1 July 2020.

     
    1.3. “Processing” means the creation, generation, communication, storage, destruction of personal information as more fully defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.  

    1.4. “You” or the “user” means any person who accesses and browses this website for any purpose. 

    1.4. “Website” means the website of the KAYA 959 at URL www.kaya959.co.za or such other URL as KAYA 959 may choose from time to time.

    3.3. Note that, as permitted by the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002, KAYA 959 may use personal information collected to compile profiles for statistical purposes.
