Former US Secretary of State, Colin Powell has died at the age of 84 from Covid-19 complications.
His family confirmed the news on social media,”General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19,” the Powell family wrote on Facebook.
“We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American,” the Powell family ended.
Colin Powell was the first black US secretary of state and his leadership is said to have shaped America’s foreign policy for years. He died this morning at the Walter Reed National Medical Centre, despite being fully vaccinated.
Powell was a 4-star general serving under several US administrations, including Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush. He also served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for Bill Clinton.
He became popular after the Gulf War and was a big contender to become the first black President of the United States.
His reputation was marred after he fed false intelligence to the United Nations to advocate for the Iraq War.
“We have gone forth from our shores over the last hundred years…and put wonderful young men and women at risk, many of whom have lost their lives, and we have asked for nothing except enough ground to bury them in, and we have returned home to live in peace.”
