Holding nothing back in his Ultimate Kaya 959 Top 30 interview with DJ Keyez over the weekend, Makwa shared how Fistaz Mixwell ghosted him.
Touching on artists who didn’t pay him after he produced their hit songs and albums, the producer shared how his relationship with Fistaz turned sour.
DJ Hloni introduced Fistaz to one of his gigs and that’s how the two connected and collaborated.
“Yeah, we made a beat. It was just an instrumental and when Hloni brought Fistaz I was happy we were moving into greatness. We gave him the song and he recorded Mellow Soul,” Makwa recalls.
Once the track was recorded and approved, Fistaz ghosted him. The song titled I’m Free was released in 2013.
“He would only communicate with Hloni, like he didn’t know there was another person involved, which was me.”
“When we met in Sandton, I could tell there was an issue because he just spoke to me in passing. After that I decided I don’t care about this track anymore and I left it and focused on hip hop.”
This happened years ago, and Fistaz claims he bought the beat from Hloni in February 2010.
Makwa maintains to this day that he didn’t receive any payments for the collaboration.
Growing tired of being used as an industry doormat for heavyweights Kwesta, Fistaz Mixwell, and Flex Rabanyan, Makwa is now speaking out about the realities of the SA music industry.
While signed with RapLyf he says he was cheated and not paid what he was due.
RapLyf signed an R8 million deal with Telkom to use songs he made for Kwesta in ads. From this deal, Makwa was paid R300K and had to pay R100K to Brenda Fassie’s estate for sampling her song.
