The country’s Covid-19 death toll has surpassed the 88 000 mark when a further 123 deaths were recorded on Thursday.
According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), 33, 904 tests were conducted in the past 24-hours with 989 new cases recorded. A further 123 deaths brings the total fatalities to 88,104 to date surpassing the 88 000 mark.

Since the start of the pandemic over 2.9 million confirmed cases have been reported, which indicates a 2.9% increase in the positivity rate.
The increase comes after the country was moved to Alert Level 1 earlier this month after a notable decrease in infections.
The majority of new cases are from KwaZulu-Natal 194, followed by Western Cape 186.
“Gauteng Province accounted for 16%; Eastern Cape accounted for 13%; Free State accounted for 11%; Northern Cape accounted for 10%; Mpumalanga and North West each accounted for 5% respectively; and Limpopo accounted for 2% of new cases.
Over the last 24-hours the NICD has reported that 212, 162 vaccines were administered, with Gauteng accounting for 58, 939 doses.
