The Golden Highway will be closed on Wednesday from 10h00 to 12h00 on the R554 and R557 to accommodate the wreath-laying ceremony for late mayor Jolidee Matongo.
Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has notified the public of the planned road closure to honour the mayor who died in a tragic car crash on Saturday night.
“Please be advised that the Golden Highway will be closed on Wednesday due to the wreath-laying ceremony for the late Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Jolidee Matongo,” said JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar.
JMPD advised motorists to use the old provincial road to the Grasmere Tolls (N1) and K43 towards Lenasia.
The accident occurred on the Golden Highway mere minutes away from the mayor’s Lenasia South home and claimed the lives of 2 other people.
Matongo had been on a voter registration campaign along with African National Congress (ANC) president Cyril Ramaphosa in Soweto.
The cause of the accident is still being investigated but the theory so far is that a pedestrian was trying to cross the highway when one of the vehicles involved in the crash swerved to avoid him.
Both cars were said to be travelling at speeds well above the speed limit when the crash occurred.
Meanwhile, funeral arrangements for the mayor have been finalised and he will be honoured with a civic ceremony for the service he rendered to the council and city.
Various memorial services have been planned for the week. The ANC’s main memorial services will be held on Wednesday at Uncle Toms Hall in Soweto with mourners allowed to view proceedings online due to COVID19 protocols.
