As we celebrate Heritage Day, we also celebrate individuals who have creatively embodied what it truly means to be a South African.
South Africa is known for its ethnic and cultural diversity, it’s been famously referred to as the rainbow nation because it is made up of so many diverse cultures and religions.
One brand such brand is Nadikwa Dolls, a dolls brand that was started in 2012 to address the shortage of ethnic like dolls in the market.
The brand dresses its dolls in modern colourful South African ethnic wear, across all different cultures, such as Sotho, Tswana, Pedi, Zulu, Xhosa, Swati, Venda, Tsonga and African.
The brand is owned and managed by Mmule Ramothibe Ka Pityana, who has a deep passion for making traditional dolls.
She recently spoke to Gugulethu Mfuphi about her business how her daughter gave her made her realize that there was a big need need for the product in south Africa.
“When you go to the retail store you don’t find any doll that looks like her, or that looks like me. The dolls we found on the shelves, to me they were not lockable and well presented to spend money on. That is how the brand Nandikwa started.

She says the idea she had with making dolls was to encourages children to explore different cultures, through caring for and sharing hopes, dreams and experiences.
