Yes, it’s the third wave of COVID-19 and it’s understandable that most South Africans don’t want to risk exposure to the virus on a romantic night out.
Does this mean that your love life suffers and you throw romance out the door? The short answer is no, take a leaf out of Bruno Mars’ book and leave the door open to intimate date night ideas that are COVID-19 friendly.

Drive-ins
With drive-ins making a comeback, it makes for not just a fun ‘old school’ date night out but it’s a more intimate and safer option than going to a cinema.
The City Drive-in offers patrons an experience that was popular during the 1940s and blockbusters movies can be enjoyed from the comfort of your car from Thursday to Sunday until 31 July.
2. Hikes
Living in the thicket and confines of our concrete jungle may make it difficult to get out and explore nature with your significant other. There are however awesome hiking trails in the city to take advantage of and most are free to the public. Some are also pet friendly, so you can plan a date with your significant other and your fur babies for a different date idea.
3. Picnic on your porch
With many city dwellers living in apartments, a garden picnic might not be an option but you can still create an equally romantic date night on your balcony or porch. String up fairy lights and set up your picnic with blankets and pillows and have your partner’s favourite food and snacks laid out. It’s also a good way to reconnect as a couple.
4. Wine tasting in your living room
If you miss the wine festivals that used to take place in the city, create your own wine tasting experience in the comfort of your living room. Get a few bottles of wine, arrange a cheese platter and set the tone with a cool playlist or Kaya 959 in the background.
5. Old school movie night
If the drive-in isn’t going to work for you arrange a classic movie date at home instead. Whip out a classic romance or a movie you both will enjoy with all the frills.
COVID-19 can put a damper on plans and dating but find ways to work around the restrictions without risking exposure. What do you miss about dating?
