There are so many Christmas traditions to look forward to each year and what goes on your table is definitely one of them. Many relish this time of year for the yummy baked treats and food. But your drinks menu should be just as enticing.
With non-alcoholic versions that are perfect for the kids, there’s a drink for everyone to enjoy, whether hot or cold.
With hints of cinnamon and orange, this drink is perfect for both kids and adults. It has a base of apple cider, sparkling blood orange juice and sparkling grape juice, all brightened up with fresh orange and cranberry. Serve in martini glasses garnished with a slice of orange. If you’re looking to spike it for a harder drink, a splash of rum, reposado tequila, or añejo tequila will transform this from mocktail to cocktail.
South Africans love their wine. From bottle to glass is about as much effort as we make to get our vino. But Christmas is a special time and while our Christmas isn’t during winter, mulled wine should be given a go.
It is, without a doubt, the cosiest way to enjoy wine during the holidays. A bottle of red wine, is warmed with a hint of brandy, and some holiday spices (nutmeg, clove and cinnamon) will quickly fill your home with the Christmas spirit.
All you need to turn this comforting winter drink into a cool South African summer drink is, a little lemon, and honey along with your choice of brandy, rum, or whiskey into your favourite iced-tea. It’s probably all right there in your kitchen.
Salted caramel white Russians
In case you’ve never tasted a White Russian, it’s similar to a Kahlua and Cream (which is essentially just Kahlua and Half & Half) plus vodka. The resulting cocktail is like a thin chocolaty milkshake with vodka.
By simply replacing classic Kahlua and regular vodka with the salted caramel varieties, a completely new drink is born.
Poinsettia Pomegranate Martini
This martini is an easy, delicious and refreshing drink that’s perfectly styled for the season. It’s made with gin (but you can use vodka), pomegranate juice, fresh lime juice and simple syrup. You’re going to love it!
Always remember to garnish your glasses with a little of what’s inside the glass, so your guests know what flavours to expect and your attention to detail doesn’t go unnoticed.
Alcohol consumption should not be for people younger than 18. Please drink responsibly.
