Gauteng police arrested over 1400 people this past weekend for various crimes.
Operation O Kae Malao conducted the arrests in Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Sedibeng and West Rand.
At least 40 were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The operation is led by Lieutenant General Elias Mawela who leads a multi-disciplinary team weekly at chosen police stations to reduce and keep crime under control.
This past weekend the team operated in Yeoville/Hilbrow and Ivory Park.
The team is task to set up:
- roadblocks
- stop and searches
- saturation of the townships and suburbs
- compliance inspections at liquor outlets, second hand goods dealers
- compliance to Disaster Management Act Lockdown Adjusted Level 1 Regulations.
The arrests were made for crimes of
- murder
- house robbery
- rape
- possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition
- possession of drugs
- theft
- grievous bodily harm.
The suspects will appear in court from Monday 20 December.
