Zodwa Wabantu is doing her bit to end the stigma associated with taking antiretroviral (ARV) drugs.
The entertainer caused a stir on social media recently when she shared a picture of a glass of water and what appeared to be an ARV tablet.
“What Time Do You Drink Your Michael Jackson. You Scared of a Pill or Usaba Abantu Bazothini. Owabantu,” she captioned the image.
Some of Zodwa’s followers debated whether the pills were ARVs or PrEP tablets – which is what HIV-negative people take to prevent infection.

Zodwa Wabantu Uncensored
Zodwa shared the picture after sharing a clip from her reality show, ‘Zodwa Wabantu: Uncensored’. She can be seen “accidentally” dropping a purse full of ARV pills.
She casually talks about the ‘Jackson’ pill in the clip, clearly not embarrassed by what had happened.
While some of Zodwa’s followers said the clip was obviously scripted, many thanked Zodwa for encouraging people not to be ashamed about taking ARVs.
“I’m so really proud of you,” one Instagram user commented.
Another added: “I just love this scripted or not but I love it.”
Speaking to the Daily Sun, Zodwa said she shared the posts as part of a campaign to get people talking about ARVs.
She said people should not feel embarrassed about taking ARVs.
Mission accomplished! Zodwa’s post definitely got people talking. Many people unashamedly revealed what time they take their ARV and PrEP tablets.
“Controversial. However, we know that people can live through HIV/AIDS. Instead of us being surprised and always acting like, ‘wow, he’s taking ARVs’. It should a norm to society and everyone. Just avoid getting it, and play it safe,” one man wrote.
