Tensions are mounting in Zandspruit, near Honeydew in Johannesburg after a mob justice incident claimed the lives of four young men, wounding five.
The youth were accused of violence and robberies in the community and were taken to a local sports field where they were beaten.
The group of nine boys were assaulted with stones and weapons, before tyres were used to pin them in place, after which they were set alight.
Four of the boys succumbed to their injuries, while five others are fighting for their lives in hospital.
Police spokesperson Kay Makhubele has condemned the incident, speaking to Kaya 959 News, he said police are searching for the suspects responsible for the killing of the four young men.
He urged communities to not take the law into their own hands and to rather report violence or crime to the police.
It’s understood a group of about 200 community members went out to search for the boys in the early hours of this morning.
Incidents of mob justice in the country are on the rise, with reports of incidents occuring daily, claiming the lives of multiple victims.
